February 27, 2003 Location of Himring, Thangorodrim Perhaps I imagined it but did Tolkien once say he based Middle-Earth on Europe then later denied it? It's just that in saying that he made me, and perhaps others, look for the locations in Europe that are refered to in The Silmarillion. Once upon a time I took a map of Europe and over it superimposed a map of Beleriand. My estimates put Himring in County Donegal in the Republic Of Ireland, and Thangorodrim (under the sea) just south of Rockall in the atlantic. I'm a little curious to see if anyone else did something similar in a flight of fantasy (pun intended), and where they placed regions of Middle-Earth in Europe. (side note: I think I may have placed my home ~ Mordor, in the Hungary/Romania area, I'm still a little hazy about that). Peace and love, see you all later :) Ash Nazg... |
